"I always planned to pursue sculpting in a more serious way when I retired from the school district. My goal is to sculpt action pieces of the activities I enjoy doing. I am attempting to memorialize what this generation is doing in the outdoors. The idea for the "New Wild West Sculptures" came from my appreciation of how well western artists have memorialized the Old Wild West and my bronzes are my attempt to do the same for The New Wild West."

Inspiration
My grandfather was a cowboy of the old west and we loved to imagine what his life was like as a child. One of the stories he told was riding for Charlie Goodnight and being on one of the last big cattle drives from Texas to Kansas. As boys we were fascinated with the old Wild West and when we went back to the old family ranch, we loved to ride horses, play in the barn and be cowboys. We understood the cowboy culture growing up in Gunnison and had many friends that were still living the wild west life style on ranches and growing up as Gunnison Cowboys. My brother Matt was particularly drawn to the cowboy lifestyle and through him we got to ride horses, work on ranches and even ride bulls in the local rodeo. Matt was even more drawn to the Colorado outdoor lifestyle, which also included skiing, camping, hiking and climbing. In the 60s and 70s guys would ski AND cowboy. A person did not have to do one or the other. That life style still exists in some small towns in Colorado. At a young age we joined Matt hiking, camping and climbing. As "adults" we continue to enjoy the outdoors and continue to keep fit so we can still be an active part of the New Wild West. |
